Running shorts are a small piece of kit with a lot of personal preference packed into them. The right pair should let you move without constant tugging, and carry what you need without turning every step into a reminder that your phone is there.
Inseam is a feel question, not a performance score
A shorter inseam gives your legs more room and can feel less restrictive on a fast session. A longer cut offers more coverage and may suit the gym as well as the road. Neither is automatically better. Try a few walking lunges and a high-knee march; if you are adjusting the hem already, it is probably not the cut you want for a longer run.
ELV3N's Tempo Short 3 uses a 3-inch split hem and a bonded liner. That is a specific fit choice, not a universal answer. Check the product measurements and return policy if you are between sizes.
Lined or unlined?
A built-in liner means one less layer to choose. Some runners prefer that secure feel; others would rather wear their own base layer. Look at seam placement and leg openings as well as the fabric. A waistband that stays comfortable when you bend is just as important as how the short feels standing in front of a mirror.
Check the pocket before the product photo
- For keys or a card, a small zipped pocket is often enough.
- For a phone, check the pocket depth and position; a loose phone can bounce.
- For gels, make sure the pocket is reachable without changing your stride.
Bring what you normally carry when you try the shorts on. A pocket that looks roomy empty can feel different with a phone in it. For colder routes, pair a short with a removable shell rather than buying a heavier short for every condition; see our cold-weather layering notes.
