Race morning is a poor time to find out that a new seam rubs or a pocket bounces. For a first 5K, wear something you have already used on a run. The goal is to spend your attention on the course, not on your waistband.
The outfit
Pick a top that feels comfortable once you are moving and bottoms you have tested through a short jog. If you have a pair of shorts you like, use those. Our guide to choosing running shorts covers inseam, liners and pockets if you are still deciding.
Check the forecast for the time you will be waiting around as well as the time you will be running. A light layer can help before the start and come off once the race begins. For a cooler morning, see what to wear in cold weather.
A small checklist
- Top and bottoms you have worn before.
- Socks and shoes you already know; avoid changing both on race day.
- A layer for the wait, if the morning is cool.
- Bib, pins or belt, plus anything the race instructions specifically request.
What to leave at home
Skip new shoes, a first-time supplement, and extra gear you have never used. For a 5K, you probably do not need a complicated fuel plan unless you already know what works for you. Follow the event's instructions and keep your morning simple.
Lay everything out the night before, including your bib attachment and the warm layer you may take off. A running cap is a personal choice; bring it only if you have trained in it and like how it feels.
